Trail-foot dump on Elm Street

The back heel is a clerk with a crate. If the clerk never passes the crate, the mill belt is theater. We timestamp the pass. We do not clap for the hold.

Ellis learned to hear a sticky trail at Candia, in years when frost still sat on the back nine at ten. You do not need bars to hear it, but bars keep people from arguing. A trail heel that stays the brightest cell after the hands have thrown is late. Late is a clock. It is not a vibe. We write tenths. We do not round them to make a sleeve look clever.

Golfers arrive from Goffstown and Bedford talking about faces. Rhea did. The driver was “the villain.” Mara kept the head in the rack and pointed at a trail bar still at a loud share after the throw. Rhea left mad. Then she looked at her own footprints in snow and came back. That is the correct order: anger, footprints, second hour. The mill is used to the anger. The footprints are the part most people skip.

Hold, glue, escape

Hold is allowed, especially on the longest club. Glue is hold that never files its paperwork. Escape is how the heel leaves — toward the instep, or toward the outside. Elm in freeze season throws grit. Outside escapes become a habit because the outside of the shoe finds a ridge of salt. It looks like a fade problem in the air. It is a shoe-and-ice problem on granite. We photograph soles for this. A bald cluster on the trail outside will tell the story before swing two.

Dump toward the instep is the clerk passing the crate to the lead. Dump toward the toe first can still be honest if the heel has already started to fall. Dump that never happens is the one we see dressed as “power.” Power that is still on the trail after the ball is gone is a museum. Museums do not play Hooksett in a wind.

Why “it went far once” is not a dump

Counted swings are the boring cousins. Hero lunge number four is entertainment. We let people perform for the bars, then we wait until a path repeats. If the far ball required a dump that showed up one time in eight, the carbon will not marry that ball. June will not file a pretty outlier. The mill belt is a repeating machine. A dump that cannot repeat is not a spec, it is a story you will tell at the riverwalk.

Irons want the clerk to pass earlier. Wedges want it immediately. Drivers may linger. Lingering is not glue. The difference is a tenth, which is why Ellis will not let a golfer eyeball it. Eyeballing is how October costumes get sold in this town.
