Brass spikes on granite, and CoP drift

The pad reads the sole you walked in on. If that sole is a rumor of a gamer pair, the carbon is a rumor too.

We photograph soles before counted swings. It looks fussy. It saves mornings. A bald lead-side cluster pulls CoP toward the outside of the front foot before anyone “uses the ground.” The golfer thinks they have a collapse pattern. They have a worn puck of plastic. Ellis will still name the collapse if it remains after a honest pair goes on. He will not name it off a pair that should have been retired after the last freeze.

Metal spikes on granite are allowed if you wipe. Soft spikes are allowed. Street gum is not, because gum skates and the CoP trace becomes a scribble. Winter boots smear everything toward the heel and invent a trail dump that April will not honor. The hall tray exists because Elm grit is a third sole. Grit under a lead nub is a pebble peak. Pebble peaks have sold more bad hours in mill towns than bad shafts have.

Mixed pairs

One old, one new. We see it every thaw. The new shoe on the lead accepts; the old shoe on the trail glues. Or the reverse. The path looks like a limp even when the person does not limp. Bring both pairs if that is how you play. We will print both. Ned from Derry did, mud barges and summer nubs, and the two carbons sat on the mill bench like a divorce filing. He left with one honest sentence instead of a new head.

Guest soles — the pair in the trunk “for the pad” — get a stamp. We can still run a Heel Map. We will not spec a mill bag. The gamer pair is the one that will meet Intervale clay and the frozen walk off Route 3. If you are embarrassed by the gamer pair, good. Embarrassment is data.

Brass, not chrome

The threshold is original brass. People scuff it. That scuff is older than our slab and we like it more than a chrome plate would be. Chrome would be a visor-shop tell. Brass is a mill tell. Wipe anyway. Ice grit scratches the top film on granite. A scratched film scatters a heel reading by enough to waste a Tuesday. Mara will send you back to the tray. She has sent better golfers than you.

If your studs are metal and you are proud of the sound on the stair, keep the pride on the stair. On the slab the sound is irrelevant. The bars do not hear. They see share, dump clock, accept, hop. A loud shoe with a glued heel is still glued. A quiet nub that dumps on time is the clerk we hire.

June keeps spare laces, not spare shoes. We are not a cobbler. We are a pad with a camera for soles. That is already more than most rooms will do, and it is still the cheapest honesty in the brass book.
